Tonight I remember the scent of the herbs as I opened the door of the little greenhouse.
My precious herbs, warm and protected with the sun shining in through the glass . I breathe in the smell of rosemary, sage, thyme; pungent and sweet. Soothing lemon balm, aniseed of fennel, sharpness of chives, spice of curry plant, citrus of oregano and my favourite, tarragon that takes me to exotic places.
I love the scent of the herbs. They nestle in with the cacti and the aloe plants. Safe from the cold mountain air at night and lovingly extend their aroma in the warm summer days.
The morning walk along the track brings the of the evocative scent of cut grass on a gentle breeze. A chain harrow, dragged across the fields to improve the soil has released the comforting scent of fertile earth and fresh new pasture. Childhood memories of hot sunny days and seemingly endless time flood into my tired soul. I feel a sense of excitement and encouragement to grow, to begin again, to trust and to accept.
The evening brings the scents of sheep. Comforting and soothing, their fleece exuding warmth and lanolin. The sweet smell of their breath as they peacefully rest and chew the cud. The tangy, acrid aroma of dung soaked straw from the sheds as I clean and then the fresh bedding which has a resonance of apple and barley.
As I prepare to sleep the land releases it own particular perfume. All my senses are calmed with the rich and mellow scent of the earth which extends into a night sky full of stars, a pale moon and darkly etched silhouette of trees.
Tonight I appreciate the sense of smell and the sensations that mingle through my body. Be at peace tonight my dear Friends.
